Now that you have scored yourself some fine thrift store loot and I’m sure you can’t wait to begin to show off you fabulous finds, but you must first complete one of the very most important steps in thrifting, the cleaning process. You should never, EVER wear a second hand garment without properly washing it first. I’ve come across some thrift stores that are cleaner than others and some stores may wash their clothing. but most don’t. You don’t know who wore the clothing before you or where it has been…

Here are some of my simple cleaning tips for thrifted clothing and accessories.

Things You Will Need:

– laundry detergent

– woolite

– stain remover

– home dry cleaning kit

Lets Get Started:

Clothing:

Find and read the care tag instruction, usually located on the inside of the garment. Note whether the clothing can be machine washed or needs a gentler approach such as hand washing or dry cleaning. Pay special attention to the proper water temperature and drying instructions. If there are no instructions, your safest bet is to use your home dry cleaning kit, If, after your garment has been cleaned, needs to be ironed and there aren’t any instructions you should start off with a cool setting to test the fabric and add heat if neccessary.

Accessories:

For shoes, jewelry, and all other small items, you could clean them by either spraying everything down with a disenfectant, like Lysol, or wiping each item individually with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to test the product in a small inconspicuous area, to ensure it does not damage your newly thrifted goods.

Happy cleaning and I hope you enjoy your thrifted treasures!!
